Could ChatGPT go bankrupt?

Let’s talk about ChatGPT for a bit. They are all over the news the last couple of days and for a very unlikely reason.

People are worried that they could go bankrupt. OpenAI is spending $700,000 a day to keep the lights on and they are not making much money. Yes, there are not so many people doing those $20 a month subscriptions after all. 

What’s even worse, there’s a drop in sales. Yep, in July their paid users dropped by a whopping 12 percent. That’s some churn man!

If this is the trend then ChatGPT is in trouble. Even though it’s got big cheques written from Microsoft, without a viable business they could end up taken over and being controlled. 

I am not saying ‘Bankrupt’ like some other people are, but definitely losing their independence as an entity.

If a business does not make money, is it a business at all?

There’s the problem with generative AI. How do they pay for free? Google gives you free search but they figured out that they could just show you some ads and get paid. 

Sure Google is spending a giant number to keep those server farms running but the cost per search is a fraction of a penny. Compare that with an estimated $.36 per AI query from OpenAI for GPT-4. It’s so expensive that ads can’t pay for it.

Listen, when you don’t pay for something either you only think that you don’t pay for it (remember, you’re the product). Or, it goes away.

If you want good things, you gotta fund them. A lot of customers I know hate the fact that they can’t get a one-time account on every software that’s ever developed.

Then those same customers are upset when the software dies and they find they can’t use it in their business anymore.

Don’t feed that business model. It doesn’t work for you. If you want to use something long-term and make money off it, it better keep running and keep improving.

That’s why I keep my prices affordable but there’s nothing I can give away free.

That’s how business works.
