Best Way To Take Your Business Remote Forever

Every entrepreneur begins solo. Starting off in their bedroom or their garage. Sometimes people take on co-founders who are usually friends or family but it doesn’t stay that way for long.

A business can only grow if there’s a team behind it. Usually, solopreneurs can only create enough value to replace their incomes. It’s only very few solopreneurs who’ve managed to build million-dollar businesses.

The first time I recruited 3 people to my team and had to shutter the team after 4 months cause I got zero results, but I introspected, saw what I did wrong, and tried again months later. This time I made it work

This has happened multiple times. I’ve expanded, then contracted, then expanded again. Using the lessons I learnt to improve my practices.

The biggest lesson was in October 2017 when I realized that my company should be able to go 100% remote. Why should we go through terrible 1-hour+ commutes in New Delhi when we could work at home.

I had 16 people at that time.

The result was an absolute disaster. Half of them quit after starting remoting, and everyone else’s productivity just died. I recruited new members and they weren’t effective either.

Remoting seemed great in concept but in execution, it was a total disaster.

So in 2019, I brought my team back to the office and the performance improved. That was it, I was going to work from the office. Remoting could never work.

Then the Pandemic happened and in March 2020 my offices were shut down by government mandate. 

We had no option now. Either we would make Remoting work, or we’d not be in business.

When you get ultimatums like that you make solutions that work because there’s no other option. So for the next few months, I did everything I could to make sure that my company was able to get work done from a remote team.

I tried many different kinds of sign-up methodologies, reporting mechanisms, meeting protocols, and task management systems. A lot of trial and error, trying to find things that could actually work.

Remote Monitoring - The Most Important Change I Ever Made

I used a system that would allow people to log in to work and then the system would monitor and keep a record of all the work they did. Later I or any authorized team member could review and check the work.

This was the single most important protocol that made my remote team productive.

Suddenly instead of having a situation where no work was done no matter what I tried, I was getting work done. People were delivering results again!

My dream of letting everyone permanently work from home had become real.
