Did Reddit get canceled?

Did Reddit get canceled?

You’re the product on every single community and user content-driven website. You’re the product on

> Google

> Facebook

> TikTok

> Instagram

> Snapchat

> Reddit

> Medium

> Twitter

Count the top Internet businesses and you are the product on most of them till now it seemed there was nothing you could do about it, this changed now at least for Reddit.

Some days ago Reddit announced sweeping changes to its API which would make API access very costly and would result in killing most of the third-party apps that use the Reddit API today.

Twitter did it too recently and they got away. Not Reddit.

Reddit is a heavily community-driven website, but unlike other sites like Twitter or Facebook, the community is led by powerful moderators who run the giant Subreddits that give Reddit meaning.

These moderators are the ones working to generate the content, keep the Subreddits clean and keep the audience engaged.

They also control the narrative and have all the power over the Subreddits they manage. That’s a lot of power and a collective it’s not something even the top bosses at Reddit can mess with.

They didn’t like what Reddit was doing. It has been a great place for building communities so far, and suddenly it’s become greedy, going the same way as Facebook.

Not on their watch.

So a bunch of moderators got together and decided to do something about it. Starting 11th June they would do a 48 hours blackout of their Subreddits and then if required do it again later.

Well, it became larger than Reddit counted upon.

The community leaders on Reddit do it out of love. Most of them don’t make any money from the time they give to Reddit and they are not operating with the same motivations. There’s no pressure on them to accept Reddit diktats.

The Reddit Blackout movement grew from a handful to most of the big Subreddits that are on Reddit today.

Imagine what would happen to Facebook if 3/4th of the top influencers decided to pause their pages.

That’s what’s happening to Reddit and they can’t handle this.

As individuals you may not have enough power but communities have a lot of power. You can change the paradigm.

Now, I do operate a rapidly growing Reddit community (https://www.reddit.com/r/growthguide/) but I have no skin in the game. I really couldn’t care either way.

But this is an important lesson to remember. You can’t control the community, especially if it’s made up of highly opinionated individuals (leaders).

What do you think of this? Do you think this blackout will force Reddit to change its policy?

And while I still have your attention. Do you market to your leads and they don’t reply?
