Do we really have the technology to create a video AI?

Over the last few months, we’ve seen generative AI do some really wicked stuff. AI can answer your questions, write your emails, give you legal advice, and even create amazing graphics for you.

But will it ever make videos?

Well, that’s not a problem that the leading AI companies seem to be trying to solve. I haven’t heard a peep out of OpenAI on this topic and Facebook isn’t talking about this either.

But there are a couple of companies hard at work.

These two companies have already released models that can generate videos, and they have been improving them.

But it’s quite a task.

AI takes computing power. You need GPUs, TPUs, and costly hardware just to run a text model. Go anything beyond 13-15 billion parameters and the hardware needed becomes really expensive.

It’s a whole different game for videos.

Generating an image or 4 is vastly different from generating a video @ 30 FPS. That’s 30 frames or 30 distinct images per second. Plus, it has to be done keeping the earlier frames in reference. The entire video has to be perceived as one continuous scene changing.

That’s a really tricky problem.

And it’s costly.

Runway ML already has a commercial version in place but you really can’t make production-quality (usable) videos from it. You can make backdrops and scenes, but anything that’s specific or usable is hard.

You can do videos of 5 to 15 seconds in length.

And it’s very expensive. For $76 you can generate about 450 seconds total. That’s not a lot of video.

AI text generation and image generation have progressed really well. Last week, I told you about an AI that even gets logos and text right. Videos will still take some time.

Progress in the AI world is happening in a matter of weeks not months right now but in videos I expect a delivery-level product to take some months.

🏮A breakthrough-level product will have to come up.

I think it could be a totally different or new company that could come up with a viable video AI product. It can happen in a few months from now.
