Elon Musk just sent record signups to his competitor BlueSky

I think the good marketing folks at Twitter and its newly appointed CEO must really be annoyed at Elon Musk’s big mouth right now. He just sent a record number of sign ups to their biggest competitor.

I am talking about Elon Musk’s statement yesterday and his misguided fantasy of charging Twitter users. Well Elon, that’s not going to happen. You know it too. Just stop talking about what you know can’t happen.

You got $8 from all the publishers, the people who want to reach the audience for a reason. It’s for access to that audience. You start trying to extort that audience, you’ll lose the $8 too.

This is one of the funniest and the weirdest statements that I’ve heard from a social media mogul. Elon Musk has Twitter, one of the top social networks right now. One of his rivals or Google would happily spend dozens of billions to get that audience and keep it free forever.

Somehow this reminds of the CEO of Better.com. He did something awful and paid for it for a long time. Some days ago when Better.com went public, it was one of the worst IPO failures in recent history.

Twitter works because it gives free and unfettered access to everyone. They use it to connect to their favorite creators (who seem to be paying right now).

The users are the oil. Ask them to pay and they will happily move over to the nearest rival. All it takes is 15 minutes to create a new signup.

Twitter’s $8 sub failed…

Elon tried to make money earlier by selling the blue tick for $8. That generated a lot of backlash and some buyers.

According to the most recent estimates, less than 200 thousand people have signed up for Twitter Blue, and from what I see on the platform, this number is falling.

Less and less publishers are choosing to pay $8 for the blue tick. They did it earlier because it promised extra visibility, which it hasn’t delivered.

Publishers who don’t have blue tick and have a good audience are doing just fine.

Twitter isn’t making all that money from the tick.

But this… will take Twitter to an early grave.

Btw… Here’s more interesting info. The last time BlueSky had a big day like this was some months ago when Elon Musk chose to hide Twitter content from people who haven’t signed up.

This is even more stupid.

What do you think? Do you think Twitter can ever survive if the founder chooses to charge regular users?

Let me know.

If you want to charge, you have to build software that helps you make money from your business. That’s what I do.
