Facebook’s new Pay for Play program is live in EU!

Wow! It has not even been days since Elon Musk started a pay-to-use X/Twitter program in New Zealand and Philippines, and Meta is already following suite.

They have introduced a pay-to-use program for Facebook and Instagram in Europe. Citizens of European countries will now be able to pay on Facebook and get a 100% ad-free experience.

Even after you pay Meta, they are still going to track you. They will keep your data, just not use it for ads.

According to Meta, they are doing this to meet regulations. The regulations actually are – Meta must allow users to opt out of personalized ads. That is, they must NOT track users all over the web and show them relevant ads (Sad, I know.)

The thing is, Meta expects nobody to pay and doesn’t want anybody to pay. That’s why the price of this ‘ad-free experience’ is €9.99 on the web and $12.99 on iOS and Android.

That’s $10 a month to not see ads on Facebook. According to Meta’s own update, they are making about $19.04 a quarter from every user in the EU.

So you have an opportunity to give Meta a 50% profit boost!

Tell me, are you willing to pay $10 to Meta and another fee to X to get ad-free versions?

I personally don’t expect to see life-changing numbers for these companies, but it’s going to certainly add some extra money to their bottom line and give them wiggle room to show they are compliant.

How does it affect us? Really, as advertiser, I don’t expect to see much change.

YouTube started a premium program much earlier and their program actually had serious value. Nobody wants to see their videos interrupted and there’s the added benefit of getting access to a global library of Music. Bigger than Spotify!

At this time they have over 80 million subscribers worldwide.

I don’t think we will ever see these numbers for Meta and X.

As advertisers, this is beneficial for us because, as long as Meta is tracking its user's data and sharing it with us, we are going to run more profitable ads!

So keep those ads running!
