Google just changed Search forever
All of the revolutionary AI models you see today like ChatGPT, MidJourney, etc are based on a technology called Neural Networks. This tech tries to mimic the human brain. Creating connections between ‘neurons’ based on the information that’s being recorded.
The tricky thing is that the language model creates these connections itself. Unlike a traditional program, programmers don’t write big chains of decision trees (if this, do that).
All we do is give it an input and rate the output that we want. The model tries many different combinations (training) until it comes across one that generates the outcome we want.
Nobody knows what the algo really is.
Well, now that’s coming to Google Search.
Google just released early access to a limited number of people to something they call SGE (Search Generative Experience). This search is powered by AI. When you put in a term, the AI will give you the results, not the algo.
This means the search will also have an opinion and enhancements.
For example, when you search for ‘How to train my German shepherd dog; it’s not going to give you a list of the best optimized and linked webpage.
Instead, It will use its understanding of your question, then give you the best set of results that match your requirements. Links and PageRank may not be the deciding factor at all.
There is a brain (AI) that is trying to rate the content.
Wow! Now this is big and it changes everything that we know about Search.
⭕ AI could decipher lousy search terms and give better answers.
⭕ We could get results that we didn’t look for but that was relevant to our query.
⭕ We could add-on explanations or information that can enhance the answers.
Having a ‘person’ answer your search query seems much more useful to me than having an algo answer it and that’s what SGE gets closer to.
I have no doubt that this is a game-changer for search. When it is improved, perfected, and finally rolled out at scale it will make an impact that will be felt hard.
Google has been trying very hard all these years to create an algo that can overcome all this ‘optimization’ and rate content for what it’s worth. Could AI make that happen?
The trouble is, AI is not an algo. It’s a brain. When you ask a neural network to judge content and you don’t know what’s going on inside, there is no transparency anymore.
You have to rely on the expertise of the ‘expert’, but you don’t know where that decision is really coming from.
Frankly, I don’t have a big problem with this because I tend to trust machines more than human beings. Their biases are usually quite obvious.
That said, this tech is quite new. It’s an experiment, but it’s a public experiment. Google is already giving early access to people and I expect it will be out for everyone in a matter of weeks.
I believe that not much longer later, it will be the primary search system.
