Google’s building a SuperApp: Project MAGI
Google’s building a SuperApp: Project MAGI
Someone wise said, “It’s difficult to make predictions, especially about the future,” but sometimes you can see a clear trend and read it. It’s just too obvious to ignore.
Elon bought Twitter not to make it the best social app ever, but to get access to a ready user base for a very different kind of app – his big vision, the SuperApp. He just wants to hit the ground running with it.
Well, there’s another company quietly building something like this though they are not calling it that yet. It’s Google.
Google has been working on what they call the ‘Project MAGI’. It’s the next iteration of Google where it turns from a ‘Search Engine’ to an ‘Information Engine’.
Right now Google’s job is to send people to other websites and of late it has been having trouble doing that. Most of the latest, hottest, and most relevant information is not findable through search. It’s on social websites.
Google has been increasingly more frustrating to use. People can’t find the relevance in the results.
Google wants to change that by bringing the information to the platform itself. Why lead users to another website when you can show them what they need on your own website?
Weather, currency conversion, stock prices, flight bookings, event information, Wikipedia-style information snippets… Google has been expanding its footprint as the ultimate source of information silently.
And MAGI is the next generation of that. Through this project, Google will target to make Google the final destination for whatever it is that you are looking for. You don’t need to go outside it.
That includes Shopping
Yes, they want to get you to buy your products on Google. Why go to another website and put in your credit card when you can do it right on Google?
I talked about this earlier too. This is what every platform is trying to do, but Google is in a position to do it better than anyone else.
They are in a position to be the ultimate SuperApp. In fact, they are likely one acquisition away.
It’s a surprise Google didn’t buy Twitter when it had a chance because that would have been the final piece in their SuperApp puzzle.
They have everything that a SuperApp can have except social sharing and communications.
I bet they are thinking really hard about how to get over this.
What does it mean for us?
Well, for starters, SEO is in trouble. You can’t optimize for anything when Google doesn’t want to send you the traffic.
I think what you would want to start optimizing for, is, how to use Google’s platforms to reach the audience.
>Google Business
>Google Maps
>Google Ads
>YouTube
Can you sell directly on Google if you ever had that opportunity? Or can you build your business around helping others sell on Google?
The challenge to SEO is going to speed up. You will be fine as long as you create highly niche-focused, content & social media-driven blogs and content websites, but doing Ecom with SEO might not be possible.
I will keep you posted as this evolves, meanwhile you can check out this video my team made on Google Magi -
