Here’s how to grow your business for cheap
Here’s how to grow your business for cheap
Have you heard the term ‘growth hacking’. It describes a person who uses unconventional means to grow their business.
The conventional means - Traditional advertising, mailers, and business development managers. They are all very expensive and often unaffordable for a startup or solopreneurs.
If you are a solo entrepreneur you need to have a growth hacker mindset. You must look and find opportunities where other people see none. It can put you on the escalator of growth.
I think the most legendary growth hacking story is from Airbnb. Their site listings weren’t getting any traffic, so they built a little hack inside their application that would allow hosts to automatically list on Craigslist too.
The traffic started coming in from Craigslist and before they could wisen up about how Airbnb was milking them for free, Airbnb already gained enough traction to get traffic on its own.
There’s a similar story from DropBox. They were trying to sell online storage but didn’t get enough buyers, so they started giving free storage to anyone who could refer another user.
It went boom! Dropbox just kept running out of capacity over and over and acquired hundreds of thousands of paid users.
Well, it’s bust again because of Google Drive and Microsoft’s Onedrive, but you know what I am talking about.
Then there’s Groupon which used FOMO and limited inventory to fuel panic buying. They made a lot of money.
There’s also the story of ConstantContact’s promoter who used Twitter influencers and blogging to grow into a billion-dollar company.
All of these were unconventional ideas when they were first adopted. They worked, became mainstream, and lost their value, but turned the companies that used them into stars.
Now, I don’t think I have any of these big ideas yet but I am employing a lot of growth-hacking strategies in my own business. Some are public like my YouTube channel where I promote my product in every value-laden video, and some are not (Maybe I will tell you someday).
The point is, if you want to grow cheaply then you need to think unconventionally. Find ways that your competition is not using.
When you do the same thing as everyone else you just drive up the price and lower the value for everyone.
Eventually, someone has to step away and when it’s a fight fueled by capital it’s usually the guy with the lesser capital. The solopreneur.
Listen, I work for solopreneurs and small businesses. From the very first day I started my own business it was with an intent to help other smaller businesses. I’ve kept my focus clear.
That’s why I make tools that are affordable and suitable for small biz. You don’t need a department to run them.
And here’s a tool that I made specifically for growth hacking.
