Here’s why Sam Altman really got fired
There was a furore last weekend in the world of tech and I couldn’t talk to you about it earlier cause I was busy with my Black Friday offer. Well, that’s done now and I am finally here with a take on this.
First, for those who don’t know what I am talking about. Sam Altman got fired from OpenAI. This is the guy who single-handedly sparked what is expected to be the world’s most powerful technology for the next decade – AI.
Of course now there are hundreds of companies working on similar or rival technologies and some of them are quite successful too, but Sam is the original who made it all happen.
And OpenAI is his baby.
So how did he get out?
It reminds of the time Jobs was thrown out of Apple, or when Musk got booted from Paypal. This is what happens when little men with no vision try to shut down someone who is leading the business in a direction they can’t comprehend.
The lead-up to Sam Altman’s firing
- OpenAI was supposed to be a foundation that works for non-profit. That’s done now.
- Sam A. has no equity in OpenAI. Yes, he has 0 ownership.
- The board of OpenAI is filled with non-technologists.
There has been a lot of buzz about AI and it has largely been negative. From job loss to machines taking over the world... It’s all been said.
Musk put out a post on X today saying, “Who will be the president of the world in 2032? Diffusion or Transformers (both AI technologies).
Lame, when he’s trying to beat OpenAI with Grok AI, which is still not launched.
The board of OpenAI has not disclosed why they fired Sam Altman, but from what I hear it’s because they don’t agree with Sam’s plan for OpenAI. He’s pushing for AGI (artificial general intelligence) and the board is afraid of that.
Not just that, they are also not working together when it comes to deciding how to commercialize OpenAI’s tech. Right now OpenAI is heavily subsidized by Microsoft and despite their pro plans, they are not generating enough money to cover their expenses.
The reason why Sam got fired
But Sam Altman wasn’t fired for money. He was fired for control. OpenAI is going to be a top tech company in the league of Apple and Google, and everyone wants a piece of that.
The board of OpenAI cannot take control until Sam Altman is there. He’s the guy who founded it… There are people like D’Angelo of Quora on the board (who also owns an AI firm called Poe) who many have other motivations than the best for OpenAI.
So here are how things stand
Sam Altman was immediately hired by MS, and he might bring 500-700 engineers from OpenAI to Microsoft. That’s all of OpenAI’s team.
Basically, Microsoft gets to acquire OpenAI, a $80 billion company, for free.
Unless… Sam comes back to OpenAI.
Yes, this is what is in motion.
The last thing a proud founder wants to do is leave his baby, his company. Sam Altman doesn’t want OpenAI to die and as things stand, OpenAI will cease to exist without Sam Altman.
But he won’t compromise easily. I expect the board that threw Sam Altman out will be thrown out and Sam will get a free rein to run the company, and I expect Microsoft to support Sam Altman 100%.
That’s what is likely going to happen.
What’s next for AI?
AGI seems like a real and concrete possibility, and this decade. When that happens it’ll be interesting to see what businesses survive and what die.
No matter what happens, people will still need the basics of life. Everything else is negotiable.
