How I Built a Million Dollar SAAS Business?

How I Built a Million Dollar SAAS Business?

I still remember the July of 2012 when I put in the seed of the company that I run now in a small apartment in Pune, a city in Western India. I had made the resolve that I would find success as a product creator selling globally.

Before that, I had done nothing like that at all. I created products for the Indian market and I sold them through a network of resellers spread around the country but that came to an end suddenly.

I was pretty much jobless and it was my own decision. I wouldn’t get a job and I wouldn’t work as a consultant. I’d create products and sell them to a global audience.

I had a goal but I had no idea, no plan, no system, no contacts, and no funding. I am sure it’d have overwhelmed me except for one thing that I had learned very early on in the business.

The Power of Micro Goals

It’s not the big vision and the big plan that takes you forward, it’s what you do today.

Every morning I start my day with a list of things I want to achieve that day. Just a small 4-6 point list and I check off each action when it’s done. I’ve done that for over 15 years now and that’s been one of the simplest actions that helped me spark off a million-dollar business.

There’s no goal you can achieve all at once. You’ll need to take a step ahead every day. If you measure everything against that big number or big target you are going to feel the enormity of your venture at every moment. Nothing will seem enough.

I break it down.

When people ask me what’s your ultimate number, what’s your ultimate target, I don't have a good answer. Often I just make something up to make the other person happy. I don’t have an ultimate goal.

But I have a goal for today, a goal for next week, a goal for next month, and a goal for maybe the year. That’s where I max out.

Micro goals help me keep focused. I get a better outcome every day, I can get a better outcome for the month. There are always setbacks and problems but because it’s a microgoal you can always rejig it.

I’ve let the decade plan out itself. The journey has gone in totally unexpected directions and I’ve done fine.

The market changes, tech changes, and opportunities change. You can’t map out a long period of time successfully, but you can map out micro goals extremely well.

I know exactly what I want to do today or this month. That clarity is amazing. I can do it without wasting much thought.

What about you? Do you focus on mega-goals or micro-goals? How has it affected your life and your entrepreneurial journey?

Let me know what you think.
