If this is your personality type, you’re best cut out to be an entrepreneur
As an entrepreneur I am deeply interested in success. In the last 20 something years I’ve read thousands of books and articles, listened to talks and audiobooks, all with the focus to decode success for myself.
As a bootstrapped entrepreneur you need well-rounded success. Everything must work just a little bit at least.
I am in business, debt-free, and sustaining growth, so something did work
But for all my study and research I have found no enduring system or methodology that brings in success. All sorts of people succeed, even the most unlikely ones, and for all sorts of different reasons.
The only common thread that I can find in all those people is that they believe in the future.
Something that I have begun to call rational optimism. The belief that if you do all that you can, things will tend to become better.
Of course, this has to be in context with the current situation. Like a family living in a country fighting with unfriendly neighbors. Things would likely be mostly rotten, but if you make all the effort that you can, you can be the safest that you can be.
That’s rational optimism. Whatever the circumstances, you believe that with good planning and effort you will improve the situation for yourself.
Every successful entrepreneur seems to have this quality
I suppose it’s radically hard to succeed if you don’t have faith that your efforts will bear fruit. If you don’t believe that you can succeed, you can’t do what’s needed.
Sadly, the most common lesson that people learn from the world around them is cynicism.
“This can’t work,”
“90% of businesses fail,”
“You can’t succeed where so many have failed,”
“This can’t be done,”

Well, some people do succeed. Some things do get done. Some businesses do survive. There is no reason why you can’t be the one to have it.
But before anything else, before the first idea you think, the first plan you make and the first dollar you spend. You have to believe that things can improve if you try hard enough.
If you are in business with the mentality, “Let’s try this, maybe it’ll work,” that’s more like a gambler’s mindset than an entrepreneur’s.
Here’s the truth about gambling- the house always wins.
Not you.
I think mindset is the first problem that everyone must solve before they start they get into business.
Here’s how I did it.
- Read a lot of autobiographies of successful entrepreneurs. Learnt how they started, what set them apart.
- Looked around my neighborhood for successful businesses. Watched how they operate.
- Carefully researched online businesses that I admire. Noted how they advertised, what kind of products they created and how they did their marketing.
- When I could, partnered with successful and smart people. Helped them make more money, learnt what I could watching what they did.
It is a workflow not a challenge. If you do this and you improve your own systems and learnings, you will get there fast enough.
