Is GPT-Store going to hurt Google search?
I was joking with some fellow entrepreneurs yesterday that AI can sell anything… Well, not quite.
I told you about the GPT-Store from OpenAI. It’s an open marketplace for AIs that are domain trained on specific knowledge. They are not generalists and they tend to give you the information in context of what they are trained upon.
This is great, and it opens a set of opportunities for businesses to create tools, products and solutions that service them and their customers, but when I took a look at the most popular bots at the store… The writing on the wall became clear to me.
The worst hurt business by the GPT-Store is Search, and to a certain extent social.
Here are bots that can answer questions with specific information, that don’t sound off topic and that can contextualize whatever you are saying to the topic you are discussing.

Be relevant.
Well, they didn’t do such a great job but where they failed, the GPT can succeed. It can be relevant in every word that’s exchanged.
So tell me, if you can go and talk to a specialist GPT and get the information you want, are you going to waste time searching for it and hunting down webpages?
Mining pages for information and relevance seems to be a thing of the past. The GPT-Store bots can just hand it to you.
I am worried about Google. They may have the best AI in the world, but that’s never been their business. Their trained AIs could take their core business away.
But that’s not all.
GPT-Store can hurt social too
You’re on the social web because you are looking for connections, but quite often you are also consuming information and sometimes you are also looking for engaging content, especially when you are in a Facebook Group or a page that posts often about a particular topic.
You are there to discover what others are saying and thinking.
How about having a bot power that?
You could ask a bot, you could frame your answers with a bot’s help. Not a dumb bot like ChatGPT (Yeah! One year in and it already seems dumb in comparison to what’s here), but a smart one. A bot that actually knows the stuff.
That’s epic. It’s great!
I think the GPT-Store is an idea that deserves to be expanded. It must not be only for ChatGPT, and the best GPTs will be created on the open web.
That reminds me though. Isn’t the GPT Bot nothing but a version of that insanely weird website where you go and talk to fictional characters as AI?
Well… I guess we know where the idea came from.
