I’ve been talking about entrepreneurs who fail to start and get going but there’s another category who just have a big problem.
These are the people who start something today, and then move very fast to another activity. This is just as much a business killer as not doing anything.
In marketing, it can be very hazardous.
The benefits of a marketing campaign min-accrue over time. A bit by a tiny bit. It takes a while to build anything that has serious momentum. The trouble is, you could be giving up a long time before that happens.
I am writing the 201st episode of this newsletter today and I haven’t missed a day since it started.
My YouTube channel has over 2,000 videos and I’ve been posting over 3 videos a week consistently for over 3 years now.
I have no doubt that this commitment to consistency is one of the important reasons why my business is bootstrapped and profitable.
But I didn’t learn this lesson cheaply. When I started a couple of decades earlier as an entrepreneur, I made the same mistakes as everyone else. Starting off a system but not seeing it built to the end. Leaving it in the middle.
Giving up without working on it enough
Not too soon. That’s not what I'm talking about. I am talking about trying all the different viable approaches and combinations. If nothing works, you better find out early, but you must not give up before you’ve tried all of what seems sensible.
This newsletter went through a number of iterations too. I experimented with a number of different formats, even using others as inspiration, till I found the style that I liked and that my audience liked.
Now I feel I provide value to you when I write this every day.
I can do it long-term, unceasingly, and without worrying about it getting stale. I discovered the right format to keep it relevant.
Trying different ideas can give you this feeling. When you feel you have finally hit the right combination.
It takes a while though, and a number of attempts. I am still looking for better ideas and changing things often.
That’s what marketing is all about. It’s dynamic, it’s ever-changing but it’s also long-term. You can’t move from one thing to another every day. There will never be enough traction for you to gain hold.
So what is it you want to do?
PPC?
Social?
SEO?
Forum?
Outreach?
Commit to that one thing. Do it wrong, then refine it as you go. Observe others in the game and see what they are doing better. Adopt their practices. We all learn from others and you should never feel embarrassed about adopting someone else’s tactic that works.
Keep at it till you evolve your workable strategy.
It’ll come to you.
