I have been watching online businesses with curious interest this November. It’s been a really incredible month filled with lessons.
What’s the biggest lesson I learnt?
People like buying things.
People buy stuff, not just to use it and benefit from the product but they like to buy stuff just for the feeling that generates. Shopping is a benefit all by itself.
November is the best empirical proof
Singles sale, Black Friday, White Friday, Cyber Monday and countless other sales in their midst. This entire month is one big sale worldwide.
And does it generate business! Stripe put up a little counter during Black Friday that reported the amount that was transacted and just on Stripe it has been more than $12 billion dollars so far. Yes… $12 billion in sales, just on Stripe.
Shopify put up a counter too and they are processing over $600K in sales every single minute!
These are really incredible numbers. If they don’t blow your mind then you have to look at them again. Read it… Read it well.
What does this phenomenon tell you?
It tells me that business is viable. You can create a product and sell it profitably. People are ready to buy. No, people need to buy. They actually NEED this.
You just have to bring them something that they can trust and use.
Second- everybody loves a sale. If you are not able to sell something, organize a sale. You will find buyers just because it’s on sale.
Third- Marketing is the function that makes the business work. You can be the best producer in the world but unless you can sell, it’s all in vain.
I can vouch for that. I have been a coder all my life but till I learnt how to sell well I was always delivering less than I could.
So walk into your entrepreneurial journey with joy and confidence. Prepare for success with excellent sales and marketing skills. You don’t need a degree or a background. All you need is strong motivation
The Black Friday phenomenon is proof that the market is more receptive than you and I ever imagined.
