Now it’s going to be harder to inbox on GMail and Yahoo
There’s a big change from GMail and Yahoo this month that will affect everyone who does email marketing. It’s going to pull down mail delivery rates and put even more mails right into the spam folder.
💥Anyone who sends 5,000+ mails to these ESPs will need to put in a one-click unsubscribe button
💥Senders need to mandatorily put in DKIM and SPF.
💥If you hit above a certain complaint rate, you are going to spam.
This is just a further tightening of the noose that GMail & Yahoo have by virtually owning all of the email space. With these changes they are making it harder for marketers like us to reach people.
I think this is significant because it shifts the burden a little more off the shoulders of the Email Sender services like MailChimp and more to the services that receive the email.
- If you don’t do DKIM and SPF, you are going to Spam by default.
- If they know you’re the sender, and you do the DKIM and SPF… You’re going to spam if you violate the margins they’ve set.
Basically, with DKIM and SPF technologies, GMail can identify who’s the sender better and penalize the sender instead of the entire email sending network.
That’s going to mean
- Email senders will accept you more easily
- You will still not inbox if you get the marketing wrong
Actually, as I see things. Marketers won’t be inboxing anymore. If you send more than 5,000 messages a day, you will need to put in an unsubscribe link in the email and that means it’s going straight to Promotions, and maybe sometimes Updates.
I know this will change the game for a lot of marketers who weren’t doing this with 100% legitimacy
- Buying lists
- Sending unsolicited mail
That’s going to be even less profitable from this month.
