There was a major announcement from OpenAI last week but most people kind of missed its significance. I think this was as important as the first launch of ChatGPT, especially for businesses.

The news was – You can now fine-tune ChatGPT on your data.

Fine-tuning in the context of a LLM (Large Language Model) like ChatGPT means adding additional data to the model that it will always remember.

It’s like giving it a permanent memory for everything you think is relevant.

Here are some key implications

If you are running a website and want to have a chatbot that’s trained on your sales material, you can feed it all your sales scripts, your support desk dump, your chat conversations and it will remember all of that.

Next time a customer comes in and asks a question, the bot will answer everything with reference to all your material.

That can mean actually having a bot that’s not dumb!

Yep, most customers should be able to get the answers they need without missing a human being.

There’s more.

You can fine-tune the bot on all the specific literature or documentation you have for any branch and it will become a capable expert in that.

Of course, you’ll be paying more at every level. Right from training to using the model because it’ll have to be hosted for you.

So if fine-tuning is the principle I think there’s a very good chance that OS models will take over. They are available more easily and can be fine-tuned with more transparency.
