OpenAI Shuts down its AI Text Detector for Good

Yesterday ChatGPT shut down its AI detector. Silently, without talking about it. Why? Because it just didn’t work.

The detector was ridiculous. It would detect non-AI content as AI and many times it would not detect AI content at all. A detector that doesn’t work isn’t much of a detector, right?

Well, I’ve always suspected the effectiveness of such detectors. They don’t make sense and I can totally understand why.

ChatGPT and other high-quality LLMs are trained on epic amounts of content written by real human beings. Now they are not really mimicking the free-ranging thoughts of a human, but they can surely mimic the language and grammar rules.

LLMs are pattern machines that work on a prediction basis. They have made a very good analysis of what usually comes after a certain combination of words (tokens) and they just predict based on the data they saw.

There were never any special signatures or hidden clues about which content is written by human beings and which was written by a machine. 

It’s language. Words on a page. If you can’t tell which paragraph is written by an AI neither can AI.

So long ChatGPT AI Detector. Good riddance!

Now Let's Talk About The Real Issue

If you can’t detect AI and you can’t stop it, is there even a point in making content that’s not AI for your blogs and sites? 

Can’t you get by with AI-written stuff all day and all night?

It seems you can.

If you remember my earlier email, I’ve talked about this. Massive AI content is flooding the Internet. That’s the public Internet. AI feeding on AI… It’s going to be fun to watch.

Meanwhile, I still prefer writing my own emails without ChatGPT, and I want my blog articles to be carefully edited and enhanced by human beings. Yes, use ChatGPT as a research tool but don’t publish 100% AI-written articles. That’s what I am doing.
