SEO Lessons From Google’s Data Leak

SEO Lessons From Google’s Data Leak

The Chaos theory suggests that if something can happen, eventually it will happen. Well, Google’s algorithm could be leaked and at least a part of it has been leaked.

It’s true.

Recently, a part of Google’s code, the part that describes the variables used in many of Google’s products was released online and it has sent the tech and the SEO world in a tizzy.

Hundreds of marketers and data mining experts are working hard to try and make sense of the information to understand how Google actually ranks you. A lot of information is quite explosive, for e.g., Google favors big websites against smaller ones. We all suspected that, and this confirms it.

Domain Authority also exists, despite what Google says, it’s there in the codebase and is very much a part of the Google algorithm.

Also confirmed is the theory of ‘Bad backlinks’. Yes, there’s a bad backlink in Google’s codebase that suggests that Google penalizes websites that have bad backlinks.

Google does use clicks to rank websites. That means if for a given search, your result gets more clicks, over time it will begin to rank higher.

Google also measures time spent on site. If after a search, people go to your site and don’t come back to Google, that’s a good result and gets ranked. If people come back fast, Google knows that this is a less relevant result and uses that information to rank.

Google also does keep information about the authors of information and depending on authority improves the ranking.

There is also a record of how commercial a page is.

Page title is still one of the most important features and it is matched against the search query.

This leak has information that’s relevant not just to Google Search but also to YouTube.

The leak was as recent as August 2023 so most of the data points are still relevant today.

I am sure a lot of new information will come to light as time goes by, I will be looking out for it and will come to you with relevant information.

Meanwhile, it seems more and more that making sure your website is well-structured is important for Google Rankings (Navboost is real).
