SGE just killed SEO, here’s the research

I ran across fresh research on the Search Generative Experience from Google that showed me that the SEO game is going to totally change. What’s coming is an armageddon for all the SEO people and I am rethinking my own SEO strategy.

Google’s Search Generative Experience is an AI-driven search system that is in the process of being rolled out globally. 

Right now Google shows it for about 87% of all search queries. Most people get a button to access it, but a whole one-third get some results from the SGE with a ‘Show More’ link.

When someone clicks the ‘Show More’ button, the search results being displayed shift down, going out of the view, and there are fresh links and results shown, wholly selected by the AI. That’s 10 links, all AI selected.

Here’s the shocker.

94% of the links recommended by the AI are not from the top 10 links ranking on Google.

That means the results from SGE are not the same results that are ranking in the search. Everyone who clicks the SGE button sees something totally different than what you get from Google.

And this, folks, is a big issue.

As SGE rolls out to the rest of the people and as people get used to using SGE, there is a big chance (or a near certainty) that all our investments in Search and SEO are coming to naught.

We could build all the links we want, write 1200 words, high-quality articles, optimize them for perfect keywords, rank them… then SGE will send traffic to an AI selected set of links.

How do you optimize for AI?

That’s the next question. If SGE is going to take over, then how do we optimize for it? If the algo is not based on page rank and links, what is it based on now?

I am sure there are answers but as of now, there are no good answers yet. Much of the SGE algorithm is a mystery and since it’s a trained model, not an algo, nobody knows the true algorithm, not even Google.

All they can do is tell the model what is a good result and what is not.

I am very interested to see what happens next, and I am sure there is going to be more and more info about the algorithm that works.
