This is how opportunities really work

I had an interesting chat with a young wannabe entrepreneur some days ago. Like a lot of young people, he was frustrated that opportunities weren’t ‘level’. Everyone doesn’t have the same set of opportunities.

That shouldn’t be the case. He wished. “Everyone should have the same opportunity.”

To be honest, I was a little bit irked at this. A lot of ‘shoulda, coulda, woulda’ never changed anyone's life.

So I told him a story about two kids. Something from real life.

Both kids came from the same deprived background and were struggling to find their path in life. They both came to me in their early teens and told me they wanted to be programmers and wanted me to mentor them.

Honestly, when it happened the first time around, I didn’t want to help that kid. It’s too much effort to mentor anyone.

So I set him an impossible task. I gave him a thick, voluminous programming book in the morning and told him to read it and tell me what he learned by the evening.

There was nothing in that book that could make sense to that boy. I had no doubt he’d put it away within 30 minutes.

I checked back a couple of hours later and he was still trying to read it.

I didn’t need to ask him what he had learned. I knew the answer.

I mentored that boy and he became a successful programmer who now has a decent job in a multinational.

Good for him.

So when the second boy came to me in a similar predicament, I was working from experience. 

I gave him a much simpler, much easier-to-understand, positive, and motivational book and asked him to read it and update me on what he learned.

The second day, the kid sent me a message saying that he was unable to do the assignment.

Well… That’s how opportunities work.

The best opportunities don’t come to you all at once.  You have to make your way to them. Opening a door at a time, raising your level when you finally reach the point where you get called for the best jobs.

The same opportunities can’t be available to everyone. They are a scarce item. Each one is different, but to get to the best opportunities that you can get in your life, you need to use every opportunity in the best manner possible.

If you do that, it’ll happen for you.

It happened for the first kid.

It happened to me.

I’ve seen it happen to so many people. All those who dared to dream and to pursue the dream with meaning.

I’ve seen it happen to the most unlucky, most deprived of people.

That’s why I was irked at the guy sitting in front of me. If he was the sort who understood the true nature of opportunities and how they worked, he wouldn’t be whining about how unfair the world is for not giving him a clear path laid out on a platter.

He’d work for it like that first kid.

This is my message to you. It’s not sugar-coated. It does not validate any excuse you might have.

But it’s the truth.

It’s the truth that I learned and I saw.

On that note. It’s your turn today to seek out an opportunity and work on it.
