This is the best skill for an Entrepreneur

For the last few days, I’ve been hanging around in various #buildinpublic communities. The philosophy says that whatever you are creating, you must keep talking about it as you build it. Hopefully, you will have an audience and from that, a customer base will emerge ready by the time you get to launch.

Here are the advantages

🥓People can tell you what they want and you can build it

🥓 You will get good feedback as you go

🥓 You might have an audience as you build

🥓 Some of them will buy or talk about the product

It sounds like a pretty good deal and many entrepreneurs have built their business this way. Some early traction, some good feedback, and a validated product and you have a business!

But I think more than all those benefits there’s one important thing that nobody is talking about.

Building in public teaches you to be a good marketer.

While you build you are basically promoting something that doesn’t even exist yet. You want people to have a stake in it, connect with it, even promote it, and in some cases pay you either with their time or their money.

That is epic!

If you can make that happen you will have very little trouble selling the product when it’s actually released to the market.

I love that.

To be honest, at first, I was a bit skeptical about building in public, but this is the clincher. Getting to learn how to sell my product best to the customers. Nothing beats that.

So I am going to try to go against my instincts and build more in public.

Marketing is the best skill for an entrepreneur

While we are on the topic of marketing, in my opinion, that’s the best skill that a founder must have.

I am technically a programmer. Been one for 24 years, but the only time my programming skills started mattering was when I learned to sell. Sales or marketing is the best skill a founder must have. More than team management, more than programming.

If you can sell, you are more likely to be in the 2% who make it in entrepreneurship.
