This is the best thing to happen to WhatsApp or Messaging Apps

WhatsApp is the world’s biggest messaging app and ironically the dominant messenger outside of the US.

So far they’ve been a closed garden. Jealously guarding their user base and doing their best to drive other messaging apps out of the market.

EU is set to change that.

Yes, the same huge market that forced Apple to adopt USB-C instead of those stupid little money-hoggers that they invented has asked Whatsapp to be interoperable with other messaging apps.

I think that’s the best thing to happen to WhatsApp users. Once this is implemented across the board the user base of each app won’t exist in a bubble totally shielded from all the other places.

You would actually be able to talk to people no matter what app you use. That’s going to expand your access quite a lot.

Interoperability is one of the most powerful moats that companies have used to keep their users spending more money. Apple is the best example.

Their entire ecosystem is based around the idea of preventing interoperability as best as possible to force users to spend more.

Here’s what this can do

>Signal, Telegram, Viber, and others would be able to message WhatsApp.

>WhatsApp could start a new section to see messages from users of other apps.

>WhatsApp might make available a public API that can be used by messenger apps.

That could mean you could create apps for Telegram and use those to connect with Whatsapp users.

That’s going to be an enabler of many interesting new apps. I’d keep watching this space.
