Like you, I struggle with opening up myself to people. I’ve been a coder all my life and it’s very easy for me to talk to a computer but incredibly hard to talk to real people.
If I could help it, I’d only build; but if you can’t sell it, don’t build it.
That’s why one of the hardest things I ever did was start marketing. Yes, it paid off incredibly. I am here before you.
I am sure you have heard mentors say that you must do what you truly enjoy and that’s the road to success.
But it’s not. It’s the comfort zone. If you do only what you enjoy you’ll never grow and your business will be stuck. Business is hard, it’s filled with things that you don’t necessarily enjoy. You do them because you enjoy the outcome.
Tell me; what’s that one thing you are doing that you don’t enjoy but is good for business?
So while I do urge you to do things that you don’t enjoy if they are right for your business, I also ask you to not do things that are transferable. Anything that a machine or another person can do, get rid of it.
Keep your energies stored away for the things that truly deserve your attention.
Focused and untainted work is the only thing that will get you ahead today.
Recently I bought a kitchen timer to time my work. I turn it on for 30 or 40 minutes and then while it’s ticking I just do my work. I don’t look at the phone, I don’t check emails, I don’t talk to people on Skype.
All I do is code.
Yes, human beings need devices and tricks to stay productive. Our attention spans are flimsy and without direction at least I end up wasting a large chunk of my day.
We all deserve all the help we can get.
