I was listening to investment advice earlier today from Warren Buffet (Yes, it’s always a good idea to get advice from the people who are really good at it) and there was a story about the time when he bet against a group of expert investors.
“I will invest in the S&P, and you invest in your pick of stocks. I bet I’ll do better.”
The first 3 years he did worse and then he took the lead which got better and better.
Does this story tell you something?
Investing long-term in a proven and working strategy yields better results than trying out a lot of different things.
If you are doing something that’s working and is long-term, even if it seems less flashy and alluring, keep doing it.
Don’t change tracks suddenly, don’t change tracks constantly, don’t be all over the place. Just keep doing it.
Pretty smart.
It’s smart because it’s low risk and it works. Success in business is not about the capacity to take risks, it’s about the capacity to mitigate risks. If you minimize the risk and keep the gain, that’s a sure road to success.
Warren Buffet got ahead to where he is today by playing the long game for a really long time.
So what is that one thing that you are doing in your business that’s long-term, boring, but yields results? Are you doing it without fail and without losing interest?
For me, it’s a number of different things. 1) I don’t fail to learn. I keep up with the tech the best I can. 2) I don’t fail to create and work on tools. 3) I don’t fail to keep the communication channel with my customers open.
These are the 3 fundamental things for a software sales company. - Make good stuff, keep updating it, and sell it every day.
It’s my slow but long-term strategy and that is what has kept me in business for so long. Without a doubt.
But I do spice things up a little. I devote the time I have left from the core activities to running experiments. The target is a breakthrough.
You can certainly go on playing the long game and growing a bit every day, but in my opinion, you also need to play the short game. You need to constantly look for new ideas that could give you a burst of rocket fuel. Even if it’s short, it’s sometimes needed to take you ahead of the competition.
My strategy is a mix of consistency and innovation and I think I do lean towards consistency a bit more.
