Threads Gets a Massive Feature Update… Now more like X
It’s a sad time for the world but the social media billionaires are watching their usage graphs like a hawk.
They are making this count… Twitter has had a great couple of days with a GIANT jump in average time spent. They acquired a lot more new users too.
Controversy and disaster are good for social media and what better time to come up with new features than when everyone’s on it. Well, Meta’s Threads got the timing right for the biggest new feature upgrade they’ve done since the launch.
Threads now has
💡Trends – Now you can see trending topics and discover latest posts about them.
💡GIFs - Okay, GIFs are here. Not that we really need this.
💡Voice Notes - You can make posts of voice notes. This is definitely good for mobile.
💡Edit your posts & threads - You can now come back later and edit your posts. That’s something
Are you feeling excited yet? I am not surprised if you are not. This is what Twitter had 5 years ago.
Thanks, Meta but you need to iterate faster
I think this will make Threads just a little bit more interesting, especially the trending topics feature, because that means people can actually look for things they are interested in, but it’s not quite enough to attract people who post on Twitter to Threads.
That’s what Threads really needs to do. Bring the people who post on Twitter to Threads, not the Instagrammers. Instagrammers hate writing commentaries and making threads.
One more thing that I think is missing on Threads is the freedom that new Twitter has given to its users. Meta’s platforms are a lot more restricted and control content very actively.

People get banned faster, they can’t really voice themselves as openly as they can on X.
That’s a difficult hurdle, and Meta can’t cross it without changing its basic working philosophy towards user content.
That’s the one reason why I think that despite the ‘Trending’ content update, Threads isn’t going to attract the crowds just yet.
Twitter has an update too
In another update, Twitter or X, has introduced a feature that will allow accounts to limit replies only to verified accounts.
That means, if you don’t have a blue tick, you won’t be able to reply to posts.
This means, a lot of people who lock posts because they are terrified of the troll army on Twitter can start opening up with controversial opinions and get some engagement.
Yep, that means less of ‘Only the mentioned people can reply’, and more posts with open replies with verified accounts posting engaging content instead of abuse in replies.
I think this little change will improve the quality of the discourse on Twitter.
What do you think about those changes? Do you think Threads has a better chance now or do you think it’s too late and they should have had it when they first launched?
