Tiny AI Could Change The World
When I see giant 70b AI models, I am impressed but I also feel a little disappointed because I know that running this giant is going to take a lot of compute. I can’t possibly host it anywhere and use it for a commercial purpose. It’s just too expensive!
But that’s not the only direction in which AI is growing. AI is becoming very strong in the other direction too. Tiny models are becoming better and better at analysis and generation.
I’ve talked about Gemini earlier, of course. It’s the first multimodal AI (it can see, hear, read, and generate text, images and audio). It can build a perfect model of the real world as we see it, as you can imagine.
There’s not one Gemini though, there’s three. Gemini Ultra, which is a HUGE model. Out of reach of most people. Then there’s Gemini Pro, which is a smaller model available through an API and finally there’s Gemini Nano. A mini model which can run on your phone.
Hold on to that thought – A model that can run on your phone.
That’s something.
More of such tiny but highly capable models are coming. Yesterday, Microsoft announced a new tiny model. It’s called the Phi-2 and it’s only a 2.7 billion parameter model but in effectiveness, it is nearly as good as LLama 2 which is a 70 billion parameter model.
It can reason pretty well, it can understand text and it can generate text better than LLama 2.
It’s better than Gemini’s Nano 2 on many parameters, and it runs cooler, faster, and smaller.
Well… Do you see the direction in which AI is going?
Better, more compact models that run on your phone. I guess the smartphone revolution is going to happen all over again, but this time the phones will actually get smart.
What apps will you make for those phones?
What new business models will they unlock?
I can’t begin to fathom the extent of the impact that these models will have on business and our society, but I have no doubt that these are the models that will cause the most impact, not the big ones.
