A few days ago I was talking to a fellow entrepreneur about the effectiveness of PPC (Ads). He works in a major agency and then spend millions of dollars on ads every year.
He was talking about how it’s hard to follow the ever changing algorithms and continuously reboot the ads as per the change. It takes a lot of work and it’s not possible for a non professional to keep up.
This is true about tech. Those who don’t do it as a business can’t keep up. It’s a full time job. That’s why we all need professionals to help.
Coming back to the topic of ads, I couldn’t help but observe that it’s changing very fast. In my recent experience the options to target people are shrinking and becoming less and less effective.
There are new privacy laws from EU and other countries that restrict targeting (it’s going to be opt-in soon), and device companies like Apple refuse to share data with advertisers.
The old razor sharp targeting isn’t available anymore.
But AI has come to the rescue. The new algorithms from Google, Facebook and others are heavily focused on the use of AI to find the right customers.
If you have a ready audience, some people who visit your sites already, then you can just load up the audience on a pixel and then give it to these platforms. They will do the heavy work.
Retargeting is the new sauce of online ads.
Facebook and others can expand your audience based on the audience in the retargeting pixel and this is the most effective way to advertise right now. Even better than targeting based on audiences.
Here’s how it works
- Put a retargeting pixel on your sites
- Do your marketing work as usual and build up the audience. Let the pixel collect information about who is visiting your sites. You may have to spend more time and money in this phase.
- As the audience accumulates start running ads using the pixel
- Allow Facebook and Google to find a ‘similar audience’ or ‘expand your audience’.
With time the results will get better and better.
Of course, this is not a perfect solution for every use case but it can be very effective for ecom and some other niches that appeal to a bigger set of buyers.
