What does Musk really want by suing OpenAI?
Did you get the latest update about Musk’s public spate with OpenAI? He’s taking it to the next level, he’s taking it to court and the reason is not what you think it is!
Musk says that OpenAI started as a non-profit foundation and took money from him to create AI that was open source for the welfare of the people, but then changed course and became a for profit company with a closed source AI.
That’s the foundation of the lawsuit.
You can’t begin as a charity, take money and then use it to start a for-profit business.
Musk did give OpenAI $50 to $100 million dollars (depending on who you ask). That’s a lot of cash.
He was hoping that whatever emerged out of OpenAI, he’d have control in some manner, but OpenAI went to Microsoft and bankrolled themselves a billion dollars.
Musk has been talking about it ever since. He’s been salty but nobody knew he’d take it to court or that there were even enough grounds.
Looks like his lawyers had some ideas.
But is money, or public welfare is the real reason why Elon Musk is suing OpenAI?
Don’t kid yourself even for a minute!
It’s an ego battle
Musk’s first move was to invest in their own AI called Grok and launch it, hopefully making it better and more useful than ChatGPT.
Despite lots of posturing and publicity, he couldn’t quite get it. Grok was only made available to a few people and turned out to be too cynical and foul mouthed to be of business use.
AI, it seems, is hard. Google is struggling with Gemini while OpenAI has already revealed some terrific upcoming advances in SORA.
Beyond that, people are saying that Sam A. already has AGI. OpenAI is just waiting to make sure it’s perfect before they release it.
It’s EGO and AGI. Two three letter words.
That’s going to be the biggest invention in the history of the world.
Not reusable rockets, not electric cars, not human-machine interfaces.
It’s Artificial General Intelligence that will change the world more than anything else.
And Elon Musk may be losing the race to invent it.
I don’t think Musk thinks he can win this. At best he can delay things and mess it up a little for Microsoft.
He can buy time… What is he going to do with it?
We’ll find out soon enough. This is going to be one hot mess of a lawsuit. Probably even more exciting than Depp vs Heard.
