What Is The Best Way To Generate Leads – SEO, Ads, or Social?

Last week I surveyed some early-stage tech founders in a community that I am a part of. Twenty-three people responded and their replies really shook my assumptions.

The question was: “Where do you acquire the majority of your customers from?”

I expected to see most of the acquisition coming from ads (that’s what’s happening in my business), then the rest coming from social and then SEO and outreach.

Here Is What I Found

  • 50% of the founders said their customers were mostly from SEO.
  • 30% more said that they were using outreach on LinkedIn
  • 10% were running ads and that was the major source of their traffic

Nearly no one pointed out social media as the place where they get their customers. 

This Was Unexcepted, Because ...

I’ve used SEO a lot in the long past but since the last few years, it hasn’t been serving me. So seeing so many people use SEO successfully is a surprise. I definitely need to change some assumptions and some marketing.

Even more surprising was that people aren’t using social media much. It seems that most social media results are hogged by a small percentage of creators. It’s harder to grow a social presence than get ranked!

This is an important insight because it tells you where the money is coming from for early-stage businesses.

Next, outreach marketing is big for any b2b or agency-based business. If you are selling anything that is big ticket then this is something you need to look at.

I know many agencies that are doing well with this. Even SAAS marketers are using it successfully now.

Personally, I am doing well with ads, social, emails, etc., but Search hasn’t been a strong point for me. Based on that survey the first thing I did was start building my content team.

If you learn something you should act upon, do it asap.

Talking to peers and mentors is the best thing you can do for yourself if you are in business. You can learn more from a guy who is at it every day in one hour than you can learn from a book or a course in a week.

I got some important learnings from that little survey and I am going to use the information to rejig where I invest my own marketing money in.
