Yesterday, I wrote to you about running a company that pays for itself. Avoiding burn… and yet the biggest phenomenon of our times is based only on this one thing – burn.
That’s the truth of AI.
Take any AI company you want – OpenAI, Midjourney, Anthropic… They are all working because someone is paying their bills, and it’s not their users. It’s investors. Big, cash-rich companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple are financing AI.
Every one of these companies has picked one or a couple of AI companies and has thrown open an untapped steam of dollars into them, but is it sustainable?
Maybe not. The signs have started to emerge.
One of the biggest AI success stories – Stability AI just lost its CEO, but before the CEO it lost about 2 dozen other executives and key people. It was a trend which finally culminated with the CEO leaving the company.
They had a valuation of more than $10 billion, a yearly expense of $150 million and earnings of only $11 million. Burn is bigger than earnings for every AI company.
They didn’t make enough money to pay their bills, apparently, even rent was a problem. Right after the CEO’s announcement, Stability also vacated their office in London, which had a rent of around $125K.
Tough luck.
Is the funding for AI beginning to dry up? It seems so.
It has begun to remind me of the first-wave of the crypto rush—an endless number of claims that the tech will change the world.
The only difference is, back then when I studied blockchain, I couldn’t for the life of me invent a single product that could solve a real-world problem. I didn’t want to make a product that did blockchain for blockchain, so I sat it out.
With AI it’s quite the opposite. I am working every day and creating solutions that impact my audience (You!).
This tech works…
How much more it can do, we’ll find out. Meanwhile… Don’t take all your cash and buy some AI stocks or even worse, one of those ‘ai coins’.
