Will you work for free?

Will you work for free?

I saw this on Twitter today.

If you are good at something, don’t do it for free

I don’t think this is good advice. At least not when it comes to marketing and attracting customers to your business.

This may work for someone who wants a job, but if you want a client you have to start with free.

Think carefully.

Who would you pay money to?

Someone who is a stranger, or someone who has done something for you.

  • They already built the connection.
  • They already built trust.
  • You feel good about them.

Smart marketers start with free. A free guide, a cheat sheet, a blog article, a video, and a little tip. Anything that helps your target customers and builds a relationship, because it’s all about the relationship.

When a prospect views you as a high-value producer you are the exact person they will reach out to when they are in the market for your service or product.

Years ago I needed some legal advice so I checked out the yellow pages (yes, this was that long ago) and I called a lawyer. He asked me to meet him and when I met him he gave me some advice and told me to come back when I am ready to take the matter ahead.

Weirdly, he refused to charge anything, “It’s okay. There’s no charge for this small meeting. I’ll charge if you go ahead with this.”

I did go ahead later and he got a client for life in me. I still go to him whenever I need a legal service.

Why did that happen?

He did something for me, for free

  • I perceived him as someone who was not greedy or malicious.
  • I felt I could trust him.

I viewed that relationship as more than a transaction.

Have you tried this? Have you reached out to a prospect and done a small thing for him for free? Like pointing out an issue with a website, helping fix some copy, giving them a tip for their social media, or telling them about a problem with their site’s security.

If it breaks the ice and gets you connected with the decision maker then go for it.

Isn’t this what I am doing exactly with this post?
