Did you notice this about the web?

Did you notice this about the web?

Have you been hanging out on social networks lately? Did you notice that they are all beginning to look the same?

A few years ago Twitter was Twitter. It wasn’t the same as Facebook, and Facebook wasn’t like YouTube, and YouTube wasn’t like TikTok, and LinkedIn wasn’t like any of them.

Look at them now. It’s the same experience everywhere. Posts, Short-form videos, long-form videos, Images, and Carousels. Every platform has them. Sometimes if you really squint and you don’t see the logo, you won’t be able to tell the difference between any of them.

How is that going to work?

How is any platform going to differentiate and find a unique audience if they all are the same?

There’s too much borrowing going on, it’s making all of them homogenous and it’s killing the uniqueness of each site.

Different people want different things and they deserve to get it, but now they are getting pretty much the same thing in slightly different interfaces.

Is it bothering you yet?

It has begun to bother me and I think this is a destructive approach to competition. Ultimately it’s going to kill the effectiveness of not one but all the social networks.

Or maybe it will give birth to new ones that will have the courage to stay different. This is how the market works. It’s unforgiving.

Problems just creep up so slowly that you don’t see what’s happening, but before long they are looming right over you and you don’t know how to cope with them.

Remember Meta? Who talks about that anymore? The Metaverse was an ill-conceived fantasy of creators who are now far removed from reality and wrapped in their own cocoons they don’t know what the people really want.

That’s what they are doing to social networks now. They think all everyone wants is short-form videos.

Well, that’s not right.

It also affects us. We don’t get the breadth of the audience that we need to run our business. We can’t just market to teens on every platform.

We should be able to craft different messages and reach different demographics on each platform.

For example, LinkedIn was once an excellent place to reach professionals and talk about work and business. Now it’s just another Facebook filled with politics and gender issues.

How do we find customers anymore?

What is your opinion? Do you think the social networks have the right strategy in merging everything or do you think they should have kept things distinct?

Let me know. I want to hear what others think about this. Also, tell me how you are experiencing this. Are you seeing a difference in the quality of the audience for your marketing?
