Here’s how to handle change
I started working full-time when I was 17 and I have seen a lot of swings in fortune. Having a blast one year and a rough patch the next. Life and business are never static.
Over the years I have begun to adopt somewhat of a stoic attitude. What will be, will be; all I can do is my best. That is all I try to focus on. Trying to resolve the challenges with the best skill and wisdom that I have.
But, it’s not easy to make decisions in a changing world. All of us are born with a limited productive life and we want to spend it getting the best results. It’s sad to look back and stare at all those missed opportunities.
The world is in flux again.
Shifting political tides, financial turbulences, and technological transformations. There’s every reason to believe that the world is changing fundamentally but no one is quite sure what the changes are and where we are headed.
That’s the problem; we don’t know if it’s time to change or double down.
Do you feel this too? What you are doing right now isn’t radically different from what you did 2 years ago but you feel inside that it won’t work the same way in the next few years?
So, do we change something? Or double down on the most fundamental, core aspects of our business that drive the profit and growth while trimming the extras?
Why not do both?
All the work we do in a day has two kinds of impacts- 1) Short term. On the profitability today; and, 2) Long-term, on growth and sustenance over the years.
Short-term is from the actions you do. The things you do to make the sale today. A call, a newsletter, an outreach. It keeps you in business and the bills paid.
The long-term impact is from the choices you make. The product; the market you decide to operate in; your branding; the alliances you make. All those things that won’t change sales today but decide your future.
I think it’s time to double down on the short-term actions you do and also to change the long-term choices you make.
That means, developing better practices, lowering costs, and getting the most impact out of your marketing today.
And upskilling, studying market forces, and creating newer businesses and newer products for tomorrow.
Double down, and change.
This is what we all need to do right now or we won’t be prepared for business 5 years from now.
