Here’s the play if your site is hit by the Helpful Content Update
Are you a practicing content creator? Got blogs and sites that you are working to rank? If you’ve been affected by or worried about the Helpful Content Update, let’s get talking.
Google’s Helpful Content Update finished rolling out by the end of last month and effectively deranked a huge number of websites. Some websites reported a fall in traffic by 90%
That’s a lot. If traffic goes down by 90%, the business effectively dies.
If you have seen a drop, don’t let it go unchallenged. You need to implement a strategy to reclaim your rankings and your traffic.
First thing, get the requirements right. Google wants your content to be helpful. It should leave your visitor educated. It doesn’t matter whether it’s written by an AI or a human being it should not be drivel.
Here’s how to find out what kind of content Google expects you to create
Choose the term you want to rank for and put it in Google. See what’s ranking. How deep that content goes, what it talks about and how it’s structured.
Can you think of at least 2 ways to make it more insightful or useful? Can you add newer information points or present the information in a way that makes it easier to consume?
If you can do that, you have the chance to rank again.
I’ve been telling SEOs this. You’re playing in a field that’s laid out by Google but you are trying to break the rules that are laid out. You can’t do both.
If you want to play on Google’s turf, do right by it. Give it what it wants.
Here are some tests for helpfulness
- Is the language harder to read or easier to read than your content?
- Do you see headers and subheaders?
- Is it laid out in a question-answer format?
- Do you have comments, insights from experts or leaders?
- Do you have the author name in there with a byline (authority)
- Do you have a video in there? Or an infographic?
- When was it created? Has it been updated since?
If you can answer questions like these and find opportunities to improve your content on these parameters, you can rank again.
