Here’s what marketers can learn from the failure of Meta Threads
Are you hanging out at Meta’s Threads anymore? I am guessing the answer is no.
It’s not for nearly every one of the 130 million users who signed up. They are not using it anymore. Quite a dead town over there.
Look at this giant blip!
If you rate the peak popularity of Threads at 100%, right now its popularity is only 3%! Yes, only about 3% of the people who came in when the hype was strong are still coming in today.
Wow! That’s a sharp decline.
Here are some very important business lessons for all of us who are in the online business
💡Hype is not success. Just because people are talking about it, doesn’t mean they will use it.
💡People don’t change easily from ‘free’. Twitter is free. There is no reason for anyone to change from Twitter unless the experience is radically advanced.
💡The user base is a moat that’s hard to overcome for a social product. Twitter is valuable because of the people who are there. If Threads can’t get the power publishers they can’t grow.
💡Don’t ever hype up an MVP! I think Threads is a great product and it might have done well if it didn’t grow so fast. The user base grew before the platform did and they managed to disappoint all the people at the same time.
Twitter and Threads are big businesses and though we can’t directly apply all of the principles to our own operations, the important takeaway is.
💡Hype only sells a solid product.
If you push a bad product hard, you will end up destroying the market that you could create if only, you took the time.
> Launch your product and listen strongly. Change fast based on the feedback you get.
> Grow your marketing as your product grows.
Product-led marketing is a strategy in which you create value in your product that motivates people to use it and buy it.
I think Bluesky (another Twitter alternative) has a better strategy. They found a strong niche and they are growing organically. Improving the platform and differentiating based on the lessons they are learning.
It might take longer to grow but the user base is growing. Take a look.
The trend says it clearly. It’s growing slowly… But it’s growing.
There’s a big chance it will carve a niche out for itself and maybe one day it will even challenge Twitter’s dominance.
That’s the growth we all want in our business.
What do you think? Do you agree?
