Is ChatGPT biased?
Is ChatGPT biased?
You would expect machines to be unbiased, wouldn’t you?
They don’t have the same notions of race, creed, region, or faith that humans do but as ChatGPT and other AI implementations have shown us, it’s not true.
The machines are biased. AI has demonstrated repeatedly that it can favor one section and speak against another.
Have you wondered how that happens?
There are a couple of reasons why.
First, and most important is what the model is given as input and what it is tested against.
You see, all of the Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT are trained on data that is harvested from the Internet. For ChatGPT it’s mostly from Reddit. This data is cleaned up and sanitized according to the standards established by the founder.
But that’s not the entire process.
Then the model is continuously tested and tweaked to get the response that the developer wants. This process includes human testers (who come with their own biases) and other models that do sentiment analysis.
So not only is AI biased, but most likely it carries the bias of the developer who made it. So when ChatGPT gives you a response that makes you gasp, that’s Sam Altman’s team talking to you.
How do you fix the bias?
It’s not that simple. Once a model is trained, especially a model as large and complex as ChatGPT it’s very hard to change only a particular aspect of it without changing a lot of other stuff.
You could change things but then what you would get would be an entirely new model.
It might not even be as good as ChatGPT is today.
But OpenAI has a vision for ChatGPT 6 today, so you can bet they are cooking up a lot of interesting models.
Will they be biased? Sure. I have no doubt. They will carry the bias of the founders.
The question is, can you read that bias and are you prepared for it?
For us entrepreneurs, the field is less skewed because the laws of business ethics are more or less universal, but be careful with the content you generate. You could end up propagating the bias and start a cycle.
That’s why human-generated content is not going anywhere. ChatGPT and all other LLMs are here to stay, but ultimately it’s human-generated content that will get you the rankings and the traffic.
What do you think about it? Are you still generating a lot of content by hand or did you totally stop already and now it’s all ChatGPT?
