Will X survive the boycott?
Some days ago Elon Musk dropped the F-bomb on television when confronted with the allegation that he’s promoting hate speech on X/Twitter.
He asked all the companies who had stopped advertising on X to …. :)
This added to the fact that a lot of X engineers are moving on, leaving X with a minimal staff. Musk isn’t even getting a chance to fire them.
What do you think is about to happen? Is X going to survive this crisis?
Let me tell you what I think.
1️⃣Elon Musk isn’t doing this because he’s wild and stupid
He’s an experienced entrepreneur and though he can afford to lose some money, he’s got it here because he’s astute.
He’s doing this to keep interest in X high. X is not Insta or TikTok. It’s a highly news- and information-driven platform that thrives on being relevant and topical. Elon is making sure it’s on fire all the time.
2️⃣The monetization play is not ads
Observe what he’s doing since the last few months. He’s launching one offer after another to monetize the audience. From publishers to readers, he’s got a plan for everyone.
The latest in the game is Twitter Premium+ and he’s sweetening the deal with AI. That’s his monetization play. He wants to move away from a few big advertisers to millions of end-users.
Can it work? So far, I’ve been a skeptic but I see all the new moves and I am veering towards the opinion that he’ll find a system that works.
3️⃣It might take longer, but the SuperApp is coming.
Why does a social media app need to have an AI? It’s not a recommendation engine, it’s an AI that you can ask questions and it can answer based on the intelligence it gathers from the entire Twitter.
That is going to be a killer AI, but I don't think Musk is planning to stop there. The ultimate goal is to create a SuperApp.
A SuperApp doesn’t depend and isn’t run by advertisers. It’s run by consumers.
This is why Musk doesn’t care about the ads anymore. He cares about maximizing X’s reach and he’s doing everything he can to generate interest and get people to install it.
That reach is going to unlock a mega prize that not even the likes of Meta have achieved so far.
